“He might go to KKR” – Robin Uthappa opines on Suryakumar Yadav’s future after IPL 2026

Former Team India batter Robin Uthappa said that Suryakumar Yadav will return to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and reunite with Gautam Gambhir at the latter stages of his career as well. Surya, 35, was recently dropped from the Indian T20I team despite leading the side to T20 World Cup 2026 glory as well.

However, the star batter is coming off a poor IPL 2026 season for the Mumbai Indians (MI), scoring only 270 runs at an average of under 21 in 14 outings. Before his ongoing stint with Mumbai Indians since 2018, he played for KKR from 2014 to 2017 under Gambhir’s captaincy.

When he was asked about Suryakumar Yadav’s future in the sport, Uthappa said on the CommBoxTV YouTube channel: “From Surya’s point of view, for all intensive purposes, he might go to KKR. It rekindles the idea that once Gautam Gambhir finishes his stint with the Indian team, he probably goes back into KKR as a mentor or coach. And Surya fits into that as captain with Gambhir as the mentor again.”

Robin Uthappa also believes Suryakumar Yadav could play until age 40 but also said that the latter’s international career might be over. The veteran had been in woeful T20I form, averaging only 26 in 35 innings since last year as well.

“Surya will play until he is 40. Unless he is marred by terrible form and the midas touch is just over. But returning to the Indian side is going to be hard for Surya. He won’t get A cricket at his age. So he won’t get to play on the Australian wickets where the 2028 T20 World Cup will be played,” said Uthappa.
