Former India skipper Rohit Sharma hailed all-rounder Nitish Reddy as a future all-format star while handing him his ODI debut cap. Nitish earned his maiden ODI appearance on Sunday, October 19, in the first match against Australia at the Optus Stadium in Perth. Interestingly, it was the same venue where he made his Test debut in November 2024 during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against the same opponent.
Nitish has had the honour of receiving both of his international debut caps from two legends of Indian cricket. Virat Kohli presented him with his Test cap, while Rohit Sharma awarded him his ODI cap. While doing so, the senior opener lauded Nitish’s dedication to the sport and backed him to evolve into a top-class all-format cricketer for India.
“Cap number 260, Nitish Reddy, welcome to the club. You had a great start to your career, and it’s only because of how you want to play the game and your attitude. I’m 110% sure that with that attitude you’re going to go a long way in this Indian team. You’re going to be an all format great, which I believe thoroughly.”
“Because like you said in your speech yesterday, you want to be everywhere, and that is where we all want you to be, doing that. So good luck. I’m sure 110% sure that the team will rally around you. Anything you need, anytime you need anything, everyone will be there to support you and good luck. Good Luck Have a great career,” said Rohit in a video released by the BCCI.

Nitish Reddy Shines On ODI Debut Despite India’s Loss
Nitish Reddy made a respectable start to his ODI career, contributing a quickfire 19 off just 11 deliveries, which included two sixes, while batting in the lower order. His cameo helped India post a total of 136/9 in a rain-affected match reduced to 26 overs.
With the ball, he bowled 2.1 overs, conceding 16 runs but remained wicketless as Australia comfortably chased down the target in 21.1 overs to secure a seven-wicket victory.
