“He’s The Definition Of Batting In T20 Cricket” – Nicholas Pooran Discusses Chris Gayle’s Impact

Nicholas Pooran, who is 28 years old, emerged as the highest run-scorer for the West Indies in T20Is and described Chris Gayle as the forerunner in T20 batting for hitting the highest number of T20I sixes in the match played on June 17, 2024 against Afghanistan in St. Lucia during the T20 World Cup that they won.

In addition, Pooran hit 98 runs from 53 balls while he hit eight sixes during his innings making 128 to beat Chris Gayle’s previous record of 124 and as a result he stands out as the leading West Indian for most T20I sixes.

“I’m just really happy that I can continue what he left. He obviously set the platform for us. He’s the definition of batting in T20 cricket. And I’m just really happy that I can continue to entertain people and take over where he has left,” said Pooran.

Gayle amassed 1,899 runs in his distinguished T20I career, averaging 27.92 with a strike rate of 137.50, including two centuries and 14 half-centuries. In the broader T20 format, he holds the record for the highest run tally with an impressive 14,562 runs in 463 matches despite his retirement.

“I’ve made many sacrifices, so I aim to achieve my highest potential”- Nicholas Pooran

Nicholas Pooran attributed his success in T20 cricket to his dedication and sacrifices. The left-hander has scored 2,012 runs in 92 T20I matches, averaging 26.47 with a strike rate of 135.85.

“It’s a proud feeling. I’ve worked hard throughout my career. I’ve sacrificed a lot, so I want to be the best version of myself. What has happened now is only because of my hard work and belief in myself.”

“I’ve worked extremely hard on my craft, batting in different positions, and at the end of the day, I’m a complete team guy. Whatever they require from me, I want to do it,” said Pooran.

Pooran is crucial to West Indies’ pursuit of securing a third T20 World Cup title. The team won all four group stage matches, topping Group C and advancing to the Super Eights. West Indies will face defending champions England in the first of three Super Eight matches in St. Lucia on June 19.
