Amol Anil Mazumdar’s cricket journey is one of perseverance, unmatched consistency, and unfulfilled dreams at the international level. Despite scoring over 11,000 first-class runs, Mazumdar never got the opportunity to represent India’s men’s team. Born in Mumbai and trained under the legendary coach Ramakant Achrekar, he shared the same cricketing nursery as Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli.
His domestic debut remains one of the most iconic moments in Indian cricket — a record-breaking 260 on his Ranji Trophy debut in 1993-94*, a feat that immediately placed him in the spotlight.
A Stalwart Without an International Cap
Over two decades, Mazumdar carved out a remarkable domestic career, amassing 11,167 first-class runs at an average of nearly 48, with 30 centuries and 60 half-centuries. He also captained Mumbai to a Ranji Trophy title, earning widespread respect for his leadership. Yet, destiny denied him an India cap — not because of a lack of talent, but due to timing.
The Indian middle order during his prime was packed with greats like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, and VVS Laxman. Reflecting on his near misses, Mazumdar once remarked, “I don’t regret anything. I gave my best for Mumbai cricket and for the game I love.”
His career became a symbol of the depth of Indian cricket, where even world-class talents could be sidelined due to fierce competition. Despite the setback, Mazumdar never let disappointment define him. Instead, he transformed his passion into mentoring and guiding the next generation of cricketers.
A New Chapter in Coaching
After retiring from all formats in 2014, Mazumdar seamlessly transitioned into coaching. He worked with India’s U-19 and U-23 teams, serving as a batting consultant known for his sharp technical insights and calm demeanor.
His IPL stint as the batting coach of Rajasthan Royals further polished his modern coaching credentials. In October 2023, the BCCI appointed him as head coach of the Indian women’s national team, marking a new chapter in his cricket journey.
Leading India Women to Glory
Mazumdar’s impact on the women’s side was immediate and profound. Under his guidance, the India Women’s team scripted a historic triumph in the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup, defeating both Australia and South Africa in the knockout stages. His emphasis on discipline and mental toughness paid off, and he praised his players, saying, “This victory belongs to every girl who believed that Indian women’s cricket could conquer the world.”
From being a domestic legend to a world champion coach, Amol Mazumdar’s story stands as a testament to perseverance, adaptability, and love for the game.
