Team India have made magical come back in the Boxing Day Test to level terms in the ongoing four-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Brimming with confidence, Ajinkya Rahane & Co has all the chances of leapfrogging to the top of the ICC Test Rankings for teams if they can extend their winning run in the ongoing series.

Meanwhile, the visitors started the series with a thumping eight-wicket defeat in opening encounter in Adelaide. They were all out for 36 runs – India’s lowest-ever Test score before Australia cruised through the winning runs. The team from Asia had their back against the wall and things got worse with regular skipper Virat Kohli travelling back to India and Mohammed Shami ruled out of the entire series owing to a fractured arm.

3-1 win can help India reclaim top spot in ICC Test Rankings

However, they defied all the odds to come back in style in the second Test to win it by eight wickets and draw level in the four-match series. And now, India have the opportunity to go to the top of the points table once again. India can reclaim the top spot if they win the remaining two Tests and wrap up the series by a margin of 3-1.

They can take the spot in the other scenarios too but in that case, they will have to depend on the result of the other Test series going on at the moment between Pakistan and New Zealand. A 3-1 win will help India go to the top without any calculations. Meanwhile, New Zealand are currently at the top of ICC Test Rankings followed by Australia and India. The Kiwis attained the top spot for the first time in history after beating Pakistan in the first Test.

On the other hand, Australia have a chance to reclaim the top spot too. If they manage to win the series against India, it will be enough for them to replace New Zealand as the top-ranked Test side. They could move to the top even if the series ends 1-1 or 2-2 but in that case, they need Pakistan to win the last Test against New Zealand.
