Veteran Indian batter Ajinkya Rahane on Thursday announced that he is stepping down as captain of the Mumbai domestic team. Sharing the update on social media, Rahane explained that he felt this was the right moment to pass on the responsibility and allow a new leader to emerge for Mumbai cricket.
“Captaining and winning championships with the Mumbai team has been an absolute honour. With a new domestic season ahead, I believe it’s the right time to groom a new leader, and hence I’ve decided not to continue in the captaincy role,” Rahane wrote on X.
However, the 37-year-old clarified that he has no intention of retiring and will continue to represent Mumbai across all formats as a batter.
“I remain fully committed to giving my best as a player and will continue my journey with Mumbai to help us win more trophies. Looking forward to the season,” he added.
Last season, Mumbai lifted the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, with Rahane finishing as the tournament’s top run-getter. Under his captaincy, the team also reached the semi-finals of the Ranji Trophy, where they suffered a 90-run defeat to Vidarbha.
Rahane stands second on Mumbai’s all-time run-scorers list in first-class cricket, only behind former India opener Wasim Jaffer. In 76 matches, the right-hander has amassed 5,932 runs at an impressive average of 52, including 19 centuries, next only to Jaffer’s 29.
Shardul Thakur Named Mumbai Captain After Rahane Steps Down
Ajinkya Rahane has quit as Mumbai’s captain, and Shardul Thakur will lead the team in the 2025-26 season, as per Sportskeeda. Rahane, who guided Mumbai to the Ranji Trophy (2023-24) and Irani Cup (2024-25), stepped down as captain, saying it was the right time to groom a new leader while confirming he will continue as a player.
Nicknamed “Lord Shardul” for his all-round heroics, Thakur’s appointment as Mumbai captain brings energy, experience, and a fighting spirit, marking a smooth transition in leadership. Rahane’s move highlights his intent to groom the next generation of Mumbai cricketers.
Though he steps away from captaincy, his composure and vast experience will continue to play a vital role in the dressing room, signaling the beginning of a new chapter for the team.
