Ahead of the inaugural Test match between India and England at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, Captain Rohit Sharma emphasized the team’s disinterest in anticipating the opposition’s strategy. During the pre-match press conference, when questioned about England’s ‘Bazball,’ Rohit underscored the team’s primary focus on their own performance. Reflecting on the previous victory against South Africa in Cape Town, he described it as a confidence boost for the team.

Acknowledging the upcoming five-match Test series as a challenge, Rohit highlighted the importance of maintaining high-quality and consistent cricket. In summary, Rohit Sharma conveyed the team’s commitment to concentrating on their strengths rather than dwelling on the tactics of the opposing side, drawing inspiration from their recent success against South Africa.

Rohit Sharma said: “We will look to play our cricket. I am not interested in how the opposition is going to play. I am focused on what we want to do as a team. The Cape Town win was good but that was Cape Town and this is Hyderabad, completely different conditions. But the atmosphere is pretty good and that’s what happens when you win matches.

That win gave us confidence. It was a good, short game. We have played five Tests in England. In India, it is the first time that we will be playing five Tests. We always wanted to play longer series. It’s going to be a challenge to play good and consistent cricket for 2 months.”

When inquired about the visa delay for Shoaib Bashir, Rohit expressed optimism that he would swiftly obtain it. Bashir, born in England’s Surrey with a British passport, encountered challenges due to his Pakistani heritage, hindering his entry into India for the five-match Test series. After an initial rejection, the tall spinner was ultimately granted a visa on the eve of the first Test, and he is expected to join the England team later this week.

He said: “I feel for him. He’s probably coming for the first time. Not easy for anyone. Unfortunately, I don’t sit in the Visa office to give you more details on that. But hope he gets in quickly and enjoys our country.”

The upcoming five-match Test series between India and England is scheduled to commence on January 25 in Hyderabad, followed by matches in Vizag, Rajkot, Ranchi, and Dharamsala. Despite the initial visa hurdles, Bashir is now poised to contribute to England’s campaign in the series.
