“I Just Enjoy My Cricket”: Dewald Brevis on Handling Big-Match Pressure

Dewald-Brevis

South African batting prodigy Dewald Brevis has made it clear that he doesn’t let external chatter distract him as he approaches the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. Whether he is competing in the SA20 or preparing for the global event, Brevis says there will always be outside voices discussing form, pressure and expectations — but none of it sways his mindset.

As he put it straightforwardly: “It’s always outside noise, whether you play SA20, whatever you play. Whether it’s the World Cup or whatever, it stays a cricket game, it stays a ball, a white ball, and whatever it is, I’m just going to enjoy it and just play how I always play. There’s always outside noise. It doesn’t affect me.”

Brevis’s approach is rooted in simplicity and enjoyment. He emphasises that, regardless of the stage — domestic franchise league or the biggest T20 tournament of all — the essence of the game doesn’t change. His focus is on maintaining his natural style and having fun with his cricket, a philosophy that has served him well so far in his burgeoning career. This mindset also suggests a maturity beyond his years, given the pressure that surrounds major tournaments like the T20 World Cup.

Current Form and Immediate Priorities

While the World Cup looms larger on the horizon, Brevis is grounding his attention on the present: the ongoing SA20 campaign with the Pretoria Capitals. He acknowledges that everyone around him seems to be finding good form, which adds to the excitement ahead of the World Cup — but insists that the immediate task at hand comes first.

As he told reporters, “I think it’s great. It’s exciting. If I look at everyone, there’s form, and everyone’s form is just building. But we focus on the now, and that’s the SA20, and we’re having fun here. It’s super exciting for the World Cup that’s around the corner.”

Focusing on the here and now helps Brevis avoid the trap of overthinking future outcomes, instead letting performance and enjoyment drive his preparation. In the SA20, he’s aiming to solidify his rhythm and confidence — key ingredients for any player heading into a major tournament.

Rising Star on the International Stage

At just 22 years old, Brevis has already established himself as one of South Africa’s most exciting young talents in the shortest format. Since making his T20I debut against Australia in August 2023, he has featured in 19 matches, amassing 469 runs at a strikingly high strike rate of 173.70, including a century and a half-century. These numbers underline his ability to change games with aggressive batting and justify the hype surrounding his abilities.

As he continues to perform across formats, Brevis’s calm attitude toward external pressure and his emphasis on enjoying the game could be vital assets for both his SA20 side and the Proteas at the upcoming T20 World Cup.
