Veteran India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is gearing up for his return to ODI cricket in the three-match series against Australia, which kicks off on Friday, September 22 at the IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali. He expressed that it is a significant opportunity for him, and he wants to enjoy his time on the field.
Ravichandran Ashwin last played an ODI for India in January 2022 against South Africa. Ahead of the 2023 ODI World Cup, he has been recalled to the ODI setup for the series against Australia. The comeback presents a great opportunity for the veteran spinner to be in contention for the mega-event.
Talking about his comeback in a video shared by the BCCI, Ravichandran Ashwin said,
“It’s a great opportunity for me. It’s not about what I want to achieve with these opportunities, I want to enjoy myself and give myself the best chance to enjoy. I went back from the West Indies, I was just taking a break. I played a few club games. The team management has kept me in the loop. They said if there’s a chance, just stay ready. I was just touching base with my fitness, started bowling a few overs.”

Ravichandran Ashwin has played 113 ODIs picking up 151 wickets at an average of 33.49. In the video, he further expressed that he has kept expectations largely from himself and holds pride in his performances. He said,
“I’ve kept expectations largely from myself. It’s easier to deal with expectations that one has about yourself in terms of the pride I hold in my performances and practice. If you have expectations that you can’t control, then you might have disappointments.”
I want to bring something different to the table: Ravichandran Ashwin
Ravichandran Ashwin wants to bring something different to the table in the ODI format for Team India on his comeback. He expressed that he is trying to put himself in a zone of discomfort to try and push barriers. He said in the video shared by the BCCI,
“I want to bring something different to the table, something different from my perspective. So I’ve been working on some angles because ODI cricket is not about spin any more. It’s about angles that you can present at the crease, the depth of the crease, the usage of that. I’m trying to put myself in a zone of discomfort to try and push barriers as always because what comes first for me is the pride in my performances.”
