“I Was Not Expecting That I Would Get This Much Hype,” Says Usman Tariq

Pakistan off-spinner Usman Tariq has expressed surprise at the immense attention his bowling action and performances have attracted during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The young spinner, who has emerged as one of the standout performers for his side, admitted that he did not expect such widespread praise from cricket experts and commentators. With eight wickets in just three matches, Tariq has made a strong impression on the global stage.

Speaking about the response he has received, he said, “I was not expecting that I would get this much hype and appreciation from all the legends and from you guys (commentators). I’m really enjoying every moment and really enjoying my performances. I’m looking forward to bringing some more energy and excitement,” Tariq shared in a brief chat with broadcasters. His confidence and enthusiasm reflect a player who is relishing both the responsibility and the recognition that come with performing in a major tournament.

Unique Action Rooted In Early Days

Usman Tariq’s distinctive slinging action has become a talking point throughout the tournament. The spinner revealed that his technique was shaped during his early days of playing tennis-ball cricket at the domestic level. Rather than being a recent innovation, the action has been a natural part of his bowling journey.

Explaining the mechanics behind it, he stated, “Yes, even this action was developed from the beginning when I used to bowl with a tennis ball. If you check my action in slow motion, you’ll see the timing is still there, but I’m moving slowly. I just try to break the fractions of my bowling action. That’s how it is working for me,” he said. His ability to maintain rhythm and disguise through this unconventional style has troubled several batters so far, making him a valuable asset for Pakistan’s spin attack.

Clear Plans For Super Eights Challenge

Looking ahead to the Super Eights stage, Tariq underlined that Pakistan’s spin unit has prepared a clear strategy. He stressed the importance of adapting to pitch conditions and executing plans effectively. “We have a plan, and we’ll try to execute that plan. If there is something in the wicket for the spinners, it will definitely help us execute our plans. This is another game, and we are really focused on winning it. It would be a good start to win the first game of this round.”

Apart from his bowling, Tariq also spoke about his trademark headband, which has become part of his on-field persona. “Yes, of course – sometimes the hair comes in front of my eyes and distracts me, so that’s why I wear the headband. Since it has been appreciated so much, I just want to keep wearing it now, even with short hair.”
