MS Dhoni, the wicketkeeper-batter of Chennai Super Kings (CSK), shared details of his conversation with current captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, who took over leadership responsibilities ahead of the 2024 IPL season.
Dhoni dismissed claims of influencing decisions, saying he assured Gaikwad he’d stay away. CSK had an inconsistent season under Gaikwad, finishing fifth and missing the playoffs. However, with a year of leadership experience, the team remains optimistic about making progress in the ongoing 2025 IPL season.
Reflecting on his discussions with Gaikwad last year, Dhoni spoke to JioStar (via TOI):
“Ruturaj has been part of us for quite some time. His temperament is very good, he’s very calm, very composed. So those were the reasons we considered him for leadership. Before the start of the tournament, I also told him, ‘If I give you advice, it doesn’t mean you have to follow it. I will try to stay away as much as possible.”
He further added:
“During the season, a lot of people speculated that I was making the decisions in the background. But the fact is, he was making 99 per cent of the decisions. The most important calls — bowling changes, field placements — were all his. I was just helping him out. He did a brilliant job of handling the players.”
“I am just like everyone else; I need to adapt too”- MS Dhoni
MS Dhoni acknowledged that T20 cricket has significantly evolved since the IPL’s inception in 2008, requiring him to adapt even at the age of 43. Last season, the former CSK captain showcased a new batting approach, opting for aggressive shot-making from the start rather than his usual method of settling in before accelerating.
“Batsmen today are more willing to take risks, believing that they can execute big shots with proper cricketing technique while also innovating their stroke play. Whether it’s a reverse scoop against a fast bowler, a sweep, or a reverse sweep against a pacer, they are constantly adapting.”
“I am no different; I have to evolve as well. This is what is required of me for my batting position. Staying relevant is crucial,” Dhoni said.
