Former Director of Cricket at the Royal Challengers Bangalore Mike Hesson revealed that they were keen on signing Tilak Varma at the 2022 Indian Premier League auction. He expressed that they should have pushed a bit more for the left-handed batter.

In an interview with cricket.com, Mike Hesson revealed that Tilak Varma was one of the missed targets for RCB in the 2022 mega auction. He added that they had the youngster shortlisted but couldn’t sign him. Tilak was signed by the Mumbai Indians for INR 1.70 cr at the auction, after a bidding war with the Sunrisers Hyderabad, Chennai Super Kings, and Rajasthan Royals. Talking about the youngster, Mike Hesson said,

“I think he is one that I wish that we pushed a little bit harder for. All good in hindsight but he’s proven that he is a high-quality player. Being a left-hander would always be helpful for that RCB top-order.”

Tilak Varma made every post a winner: Mike Hesson

Tilak Varma proved himself to be a capable batter in his maiden season for the Mumbai Indians. He is one of the talented youngsters in the Indian domestic circuit and has a chance to make it to the 2024 T20 World Cup squad. He scored 397 runs in the 2022 season, including a couple of centuries. Overall, he has scored 740 runs at a strike rate of 144.53 in the Indian Premier League. He was also rewarded with an India debut in August 2023.

Mike Hesson expressed that they would have loved to have Tilak Varma in the Royal Challengers Bangalore squad. He said to Cricket.com,

“It would have been nice to have another left-hander in the top order. There was a lot of talk that he was susceptible to the short ball domestically. But certainly since he’s come to the IPL, he’s made every post a winner.”
