ICC Announces Highest-Ever Prize Money For Women’s T20 WC

Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, commencing on October 3 in Sharjah, UAE, promises to be a landmark event in women’s cricket. With a record prize fund and significant changes in scheduling, this year’s tournament sets a new standard for women’s sports. This will be the first ICC event where women will receive the same prize money as their male counterparts.

Record prize money for Women’s T20 World Cup 2024

The total prize money for the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 has surged to USD 7.95 million, marking a 225% increase from the USD 2.45 million awarded in 2023. This substantial rise underscores the growing recognition and investment in women’s cricket.

The champion team of the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup will receive USD 2.34 million. This amount represents a remarkable 134% increase over the USD 1 million awarded to Australia in 2023. This substantial prize reflects the ICC’s commitment to elevating women’s cricket to parity with men’s events.

The runners-up will earn USD 1.17 million, a significant jump from the USD 500,000 awarded to South Africa as the losing finalists in 2023. This increase highlights the ICC’s efforts to reward teams for their performance more generously.

The losing semi-finalists in 2024 will receive USD 675,000 each, up from USD 210,000 in 2023. This boost aims to incentivize and support teams reaching the semi-finals, making the competition even more thrilling.

All ten participating teams will be guaranteed USD 112,500, ensuring that every team benefits financially from their involvement in the tournament. This approach is designed to support all participants, regardless of their final standing.

ICC’s commitment

The 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup marks the first time the ICC has implemented equal prize money for women’s and men’s tournaments. This decision, announced in June 2023, reflects a broader commitment to gender equality in sports.

In comparison, the winners of the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup, India, were awarded USD 2.45 million. The slight difference in the prize amounts between the men’s and women’s tournaments is due to the number of participating teams, with the men’s event featuring 20 teams compared to 10 in the women’s competition.

Equal prize money is expected to enhance the visibility and appeal of women’s cricket, providing players with greater recognition and financial reward. This change is a significant step towards achieving parity between men’s and women’s cricket.

October 5 fixtures swapped

Initially, the fixtures for October 5 in Sharjah included Bangladesh vs. England in the afternoon and Australia vs. Sri Lanka in the evening. The ICC has announced a swap in the schedule. Australia and Sri Lanka will now play in the afternoon, and England will face Bangladesh in the evening. This change aims to optimize viewing times and fan engagement.
