Women”s cricket has been receiving the attention of public right from the World Cup 2017. Several records were shattered in that specific tournament and the viewership increased drastically since that Event.
The inclusion of cricket as a part of world games like Olympics and Commonwealth games has been a decade long-debate. The gentleman”s game made its entry to the world games at Malaysia in 1998 where Proteas were crowned the champions. However, there weren”t any appearances after it. But now, as a delight to its fans, ICC has made an interesting move.
The ICC has confirmed that it has submitted its bid for the inclusion of Women”s T20 for Commonwealth games at Birmingham (2022). This news has made the entire cricketing fraternity ecstatic as it would be a moment of success for the sport to announce its entry.
Speaking to the media, ICC chief Dave Richardson said: “We would like cricket to lead the way in the Commonwealth in inspiring more young girls to take up sport regardless of their background or culture.” It is to be noted that the bid has been made by ICC in partnership with England and Wales Cricket Board.
Southern stars have won the recently concluded world T20 at Caribbean islands. It was their fourth title in the process and the skipper Meg Lanning in a video said that it will definitely be a proud moment if they could make it to the world games.
Last year, MCC had met to discuss the possibility of inclusion of men”s cricket in Olympics 2028 at Los Angeles. While the attempts for it are still on the cards, this move from ICC would bring a lot of confidence among women cricketers and it will be interesting if it can turn out to be a successful one.
