In the most exciting match of the current ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023, South Africa narrowly defeated Pakistan by just one wicket at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium on October 27.
This incredible win has moved South Africa to the first position on the points table with 10 points and a very good net run rate of +2.032, overtaking India.
Pakistan made the correct decision to bat first after winning the toss. Unfortunately, none of their batsmen capitalized on their initial moments, and the team found themselves at 141/5 within 28 overs.
Then, a much-needed partnership of 84 runs for the sixth wicket happened between Shadab Khan (scoring 43) and Saud Shakeel (scoring 52).
But, Tabraiz Shamsi made a remarkable comeback, taking four crucial wickets (4/60). Marcos Jansen (3/43) and Gerald Coetzee (2/42) also bowled impressively. As a result, Pakistan was all out for 270 in 46.4 overs.
South Africa’s historic win in Chennai also saw several records being set during the match. Here are 3 notable records from the South Africa vs. Pakistan game.
#3 South Africa achieved their highest ODI run-chase against Pakistan
For South Africa, winning on Friday in the 2023 ODI World Cup while chasing feels even more special. It marked their first successful ODI chase in 11 matches. What’s more, they had never previously managed to chase down a total of over 260 runs against Pakistan in ODIs.
Therefore, their exciting run-chase of 271 runs in Chennai stands as their highest-ever successful run-chase against Pakistan in ODI history. In the grand scheme, this is South Africa’s second-highest successful run-chase in their ODI World Cup history.
#2 For the first time, Pakistan has experienced a losing streak of four consecutive ODI World Cup matches
The 2023 ODI World Cup hasn’t gone well for Pakistan. They started with two wins but have struggled since. They’ve lost four matches in a row and might not make it to the next stage.
They didn’t perform well against India, Australia, Afghanistan, and South Africa. This is the first time they’ve lost four consecutive matches in the ODI World Cup.
#1 South Africa has become the first team to win two ODI World Cup matches with just one wicket remaining
On Friday, South Africa achieved another remarkable record by becoming the first team ever to win multiple ODI World Cup matches with just one wicket remaining.
While six different teams have registered one-wicket victories in the quadrennial tournament, South Africa is the first to accomplish this feat twice.
South Africa’s initial one-wicket ODI World Cup win was against Sri Lanka in Guyana during the 2007 edition. In that game, Robin Peterson and Charl Langeveldt were unbeaten for South Africa while chasing a target of 210.
This is the same match where Lasith Malinga took four wickets in as many consecutive balls. It’s worth noting that both of South Africa’s one-wicket wins occurred in the 26th match of their respective tournaments.
