Netherlands stunned South Africa in a rain-curtailed encounter reduced to 43 overs side played at HPCA Stadium, Dharamshala on 17th October 2023. It was a terrific effort by the Dutch as they recovered from 82 for 5 to 245 for 8 thanks to Scott Edwards’s captain’s knock.

The bowling looked impressive as they bowled out South Africa for 207 helping Netherlands register 38 38-run victory. For his unbeaten 78, Scott Edwards was named the player of the match. The Netherlands made it into the mega event by defeating West Indies and other teams in ICC qualifiers.

Before this historic win, there were a few times that the Netherlands stunned top nations in ICC events that made the news. They needed exposure to play at the biggest stage of all and provide support so the Netherlands could do wonders on the international stage.

  1. Netherlands beat England (2009 T20 World Cup)

Netherlands stunned the hosts England in the first match of the ICC T20 World Cup match played at Lords, London on 5th June 2009. Jereon Smith won the toss and decided to field first.

Luke Wright and Ravi Bopara put on 102 runs for the opening wicket before the Netherlands bowlers kept them under check. It was a disciplined bowling effort as they restricted England to 162 for 5 in 20 overs.

Chasing 163 runs to win, Tom de Grooth 49, Peter Borren quickfire 30 off 25 deliveries and Ryan Ten Doeschate along with Edgar held their nerves to win the match by 4 wickets off the final delivery. Netherlands stunned England in a major tournament for the first time. For his 49 from 30 balls, de Grooth was named player of the match award.

  1. Netherlands beat South Africa (2022 T20 World Cup)

Netherlands produced another superb effort knocking the South Africa team out of the T20 World Cup. They played a Super 12 match at Adelaide Oval on 6th November 2022.

South African captain Temba Bavuma won the toss and decided to field first. Thanks to contributions by Myburgh, Max O Dowd, a cameo by Tom Cooper 35 off 19 deliveries, Colin Ackermann 41 off 26 balls helped Netherlands post 158 for 4 in 20 overs.

The Netherlands bowlers showed their discipline as they kept picking wickets right from the word start and made life tough for South African batters. They restricted South Africa to 145 for 8 in 20 overs and registered 13 run victories. Brandon Glover took 3 for 9 in 2 overs, Fred Klassen and de Leede took 2 wickets each while Meekeren took 1 wicket. For his cameo 41 off 26 deliveries, Colin Ackermann was named the player of the match award.

  1. Netherlands beat South Africa (ICC Cricket World Cup 2023)

Netherlands registered their first-ever victory over South Africa in 50 Over World Cup history. The match was reduced to 43 overs a side at Dharmshala on 17th October. After being asked to bat first, the Netherlands looked in deep trouble at 82 for 5.

Scott Edwards along with Teja Nidamanuru, Logan Van Beek, Roelf Van Merwe, and Aryan Dutt helped the Netherlands post 245 for 8 in 43 overs. The bowlers did a great job as they took 4 wickets initially put the South African team under pressure. Despite Miller’s resistance and Keshav Maharaj’s knock, the Netherlands bowled out Proteas for 207 to register 38 38-run victory.

For his unbeaten 78 knock, Scott Edwards was named the player of the match award. The Netherlands would be looking to continue their form when they face Sri Lanka at Lucknow.
