The Indian Team reached the semi-finals of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 with a dominating 302-run victory over Sri Lanka at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on 2nd November. After being asked to bat first by Sri Lankan captain Kusal Mendis, India lost an early wicket of Rohit Sharma in the first over itself.
Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill steadied the ship taking singles and hitting boundaries that put pressure on the Lankan bowling. Both Indian batters were given a reprieve putting on an excellent display of batting. Both added 189 runs for the 2nd wicket laying strong platform to post a big total. Shreyas Iyer also joined in the party with big hitting and putting Lankan bowlers under immense pressure. Ravindra Jadeja scored valuable runs to help Team India post 357 for 8 in 50 overs.
The Indian pace trio Bumrah, Siraj, and Shami showed their class not allowing the Lankan batters a chance. Bumrah got the wicket of the very first ball dismissing Nissanka. Siraj then got rid of Karaunate, Samawickrama, and Kusal Mendis to leave Lanka in deep trouble. Mohammed Shami continued his superb form in this tournament picking his 2nd five-wicket haul to bowl out Sri Lanka for just 55 runs and register a 302-run victory.

Mohammed Shami surpassed Zaheer’s Khan record of becoming the highest wicket-taker for Team India in World Cup history. Since his inclusion in the playing XI against New Zealand, Shami has created havoc with 2 five-wicket hauls and 4 wicket hauls during the match against England at Lucknow.
After the five-wicket haul against Sri Lanka, Shami has grabbed 45 wickets from 14 matches in World Cup history. Zaheer Khan grabbed a total of 44 wickets from 23 matches and Javagal Srinath took 44 wickets from 34 matches.
Shami did not feature in the first four matches including Australia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. He would be looking to continue his brilliant form in the upcoming matches including two league matches and knockout matches.

The Sri Lankan batting looked out of sorts as they were bundled out for 55 runs in 19.4 overs chasing down 358. Three out batters reached double digits while 5 batters were dismissed without opening their account.
Sri Lanka’s 55 is the lowest ODI total by a full-member nation in World Cup history. Before this, Bangladesh scored 58 against West Indies in the 2011 edition at Mirpur.
This is Sri Lanka’s second-lowest ODI total against India. Sri Lanka was bundled out for a paltry total of 50 in the 2023 Asia Cup finals.

Afridi achieved the feat in the 2011 edition while Starc did in the 2019 World Cup where Australia lost in the semi-finals to England.
Shami would be hoping to prove with another match-winning performance against South Africa and equal Afridi and Starc’s record of picking wickets.
