Netherlands had bright spots, but the lack of experience big stage could not help them to defeat Pakistan in the opening match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 played at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad on 6th October. Bas de Leede entered the list of players to score 50-plus runs and grab 4 wickets in a World Cup match.

It was an amazing performance by de Leede with some bowling effort as he broke 120 runs getting rid of Mohammed Rizwan. He then dismissed Iftikhar Ahmed in quick succession to leave Pakistan in trouble.

Bas de Leede came into the attack getting wickets of Shahbad Khan and Hasan Ali off successive deliveries. It was an amazing bowling effort as he finished with 4 for 62 in 9 overs. Thanks to a superb bowling effort, Netherlands skittled them out for 286 in 49 overs.

He came at the crease after the fall of Colin Ackermann’s wicket with scoreboard reading 51 for 2. De Leede took some time initially before putting pressure on the Pakistan bowlers taking singles and hitting attacking shots. The Netherlands lost quick wickets of Vikramjit Singh, Teja Nidamanuru, and Scott Edwards.

Bas de Leede completed his half-century off 50 deliveries to keep Netherlands in the chase. He was eventually dismissed by Mohammad Nawaz to derail the innings for 67. Despite his efforts, the Netherlands could only muster 205.

Other Players to Score 50 Plus Runs and Pick 4 Wickets in World Cup Match

Duncan Flecther became the first player to score 50 50-plus runs and Pick 4 Wickets in a World Cup match. He achieved this milestone for Zimbabwe against Australia during the 1983 edition. During the 1992 World Cup played in Australia and New Zealand, Ian Botham scored more than fifty and grabbed 4 wickets for England against Australia.

Neil Johnson achieved the feat of scoring 50 plus runs and 4 wickets for Zimbabwe against Kenya in the 1999 edition played in England. Kenya’s Maurice Odumbe achieved this feat against Bangladesh in the 2003 edition played in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Kenya.

Feiko Kloppenburg made it possible for the Netherlands against Kenya in the 2003 edition. The star Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh achieved this brilliant achievement against Ireland during the 2011 edition played at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.

TM Dilshan also proved his worth with match-winning performance against Zimbabwe during the 2011 edition. Wahab Riaz scored 50-plus runs and grabbed 4 wickets during 2015 World Cup match against Ireland.

Bangladesh star all-rounder Shakib AL Hasan did the job of scoring 50 plus runs and picking 4 wickets against Afghanistan in the 2019 edition.
