ICC Cricket World Cup 2023: Hardik Pandya Unavailable For India’s 2023 World Cup Match Against New Zealand In Dharamshala

Hardik Pandya will not be participating in India’s upcoming 2023 World Cup match against New Zealand in Dharamshala on Sunday, October 22. The all-rounder sustained an ankle injury during the game against Bangladesh in Pune on Thursday while attempting to prevent a boundary off his own bowling, resulting in an awkward fall.

The BCCI released a statement on Friday, confirming that the vice-captain has been advised to rest and will not accompany the team to Dharamshala. Given the one-week gap between India’s matches against New Zealand and England, there is a possibility that Hardik could return for the match against the defending champions on October 29 in Lucknow.

This is the official statement issued by the BCCI regarding Hardik Pandya:

“Team India vice-captain Hardik Pandya sustained an injury to his left ankle while fielding on his own bowling during India’s match against Bangladesh at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune.”

”The all-rounder was taken for scans and is advised rest. He will be under the constant supervision of the BCCI Medical Team.”

The statement further read:

“He will not be taking the flight to Dharamsala with the team on 20th October and will now join the team directly in Lucknow where India play England.”

The absence of Hardik Pandya has a direct impact on India’s team balance

In the ninth over of the first innings, Hardik Pandya joined the attack. He attempted to block the ball with his foot during his follow-through, leading to an awkward fall.

Hardik Pandya’s unique all-round skills provide a balance that’s tough to substitute, making his absence a significant setback for India, especially in their important match against New Zealand.

Given concerns about Shardul Thakur’s bowling, India might consider bringing in Mohammed Shami for Hardik’s bowling and Suryakumar Yadav for his batting.

Two changes may be necessary to compensate for the all-rounder’s absence, highlighting his importance to the team.
