ICC Cricket World Cup 2023: Jasprit Bumrah Replicates Shoaib Akhtar’s Flight Celebration After Removing Mohammad Rizwan

Team India’s top bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, paid tribute to Shoaib Akhtar’s iconic airplane celebration by replicating it following his dismissal of Mohammad Rizwan in the India-Pakistan match on October 14 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Pakistan, after losing the toss, was batting and reached a score of 155/2 in 29.3 overs, indicating a favorable position for them. However, Mohammed Siraj’s delivery dismissed Babar Azam, a crucial breakthrough for India at that point. Subsequently, Rohit Sharma introduced Jasprit Bumrah into the bowling attack, making the change after a couple of overs.

The decision bore fruit when Jasprit Bumrah bowled out Mohammed Rizwan, who was at 49 runs. Bumrah marked his first wicket of the match with a distinctive celebration, extending his arms outwards, reminiscent of Shoaib Akhtar’s renowned airplane celebration.

Jasprit Bumrah’s dismissal of Mohammad Rizwan in the 34th over led to Pakistan being bowled out for 191

Pakistan’s fortunes took a turn for the worse, and they were dismissed for a mere 191 runs in 42.5 overs. Their last eight wickets could only contribute 36 runs. India’s bowling attack, featuring Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, and Hardik Pandya, each claimed two wickets.

Discussing the first innings at the innings break, Kuldeep Yadav commented:

“I knew where to bowl and it was a difficult wicket to bowl on. It was on the slower side. I was just focussing on the length and trying to keep it wicket-to-wicket, varying my pace and bowling my variations.”

“I was bowling really well, not giving them too much width. Rizwan did not sweep me at all, so I tried to keep it wicket-to-wicket and wanted him to play a bad shot.”

Kuldeep added:

“(On the ball that got Shakeel out) I have been watching him, he has tried to sweep and paddle. I tried to keep it straight, with wrong’uns and flippers.”

”That was a good ball. I thought he did not read it. He probably thought it would come slow but it skidded through. (On the crowd) The atmosphere was crazy. It was unbelievable.”
