ICC Cricket World Cup 2023: Shubman Gill Is The Fastest To Reach 2000 ODI Runs

The remarkable Indian opener, Shubman Gill, set a new record as the quickest batter to reach 2000 runs in ODI cricket. He accomplished this feat during India’s 2023 World Cup match against New Zealand at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala on Sunday, October 22.

Gill needed just 14 runs to reach this milestone when he entered the contest. After a shaky beginning, he elegantly drove the ball through extra cover off Trent Boult’s delivery in the seventh over to break the record.

Gill surpassed Hashim Amla of South Africa, who reached his 2000th ODI run in 40 innings, achieving this milestone in just 38 innings, two innings quicker.

Among Indian players, Shikhar Dhawan held the previous record, taking 48 innings to cross the 2000-run mark in ODIs. In contrast, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul both achieved this in 53 innings.

Notably, Shubman Gill also retains the title of the fastest Indian to reach 1000 ODI runs and stands as the second-fastest globally, achieving it in just 19 innings.

India’s opening batsmen make a good start while chasing 274 against New Zealand in the 2023 World Cup

A fantastic innings of 130 runs from Daryl Mitchell helped New Zealand reach a total of 273 in their 50 overs after India chose to field first in their 2023 World Cup match in Dharamsala.

The pitch was notably drier than usual, but Mitchell’s partnership of 159 runs with Rachin Ravindra for the third wicket saved New Zealand from a difficult position.

However, India’s bowlers made a strong comeback, with Mohammed Shami taking his third ODI five-wicket haul to dismiss New Zealand for 273 runs.

As for the reply, captain Rohit Sharma maintained his excellent form and made a strong start by coming forward to disrupt the length of the New Zealand bowlers. While Shubman Gill had some initial difficulties, he soon increased his pace and followed Rohit’s lead by using his footwork.

As of now, India stands at 71/0 after 11 overs, with Rohit Sharma at 46* and Shubman Gill at 25*. They seem to be in a comfortable position. Both teams are aiming for their fifth consecutive victory in the 2023 World Cup.
