ICC Cricket World Cup 2023: ‘Sky Will Replace Iyer If…’: Former Indian Chief Selector On India’s Probable Playing XI Against Bangladesh

The former BCCI chief selector MSK Prasad has discussed why Suryakumar Yadav and Mohammed Shami will have limited roles for India in the World Cup. Amidst the ongoing upsets and historic achievements in the 2023 ICC World Cup in India, Rohit Sharma’s team is looking to continue their success.

Following their dominant victory over Babar Azam’s Pakistan, where they maintained their perfect World Cup record against Pakistan, Rohit and his team are now focused on securing their fourth consecutive win in the tournament against Bangladesh.

The ex-BCCI chief selector has clarified when India’s backup players will be included in the ODI World Cup team

Bangladesh, who have pulled off surprises in the World Cup, look to follow Afghanistan and the Netherlands’ lead in defeating India for the first time in the ODI World Cup at Pune’s Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium.

While India is bringing opener Shubman Gill back to the playing XI for the crucial Pakistan clash, they intend to keep their starting eleven unchanged. India has chosen not to include notable players like Suryakumar Yadav and experienced bowler Mohammed Shami in the ideal starting XI for the ODI World Cup.

Team India

Will they consider alterations for the Bangladesh match, possibly replacing Shardul Thakur with Shami? MSK Prasad, the former chief selector, has detailed the conditions under which India might include the eager Shami in the playing XI for the World Cup.

Rahul Dravid and his team are adopting a horses-for-course approach

Rahul Dravid and his team are employing a strategy of selecting players based on the specific needs of each match or condition.

“They are using horses for courses and it is working fantastically well for the team. If you see they used Ashwin in Chennai and Shardul for the other two games (in Delhi and Ahmedabad). Last game, Shardul was not required as the others did the job (he bowled only two overs),” Prasad told news agency PTI.

Shami secured a crucial five-wicket haul against Australia in India’s previous white-ball series before the 2023 World Cup. Despite this, Shami has been on the sidelines in India’s first three World Cup matches against Australia, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. The 33-year-old pacer has an impressive record of 171 wickets in 94 ODIs for India.

“Shami will come into picture if they want to rotate Siraj. Replacements are very clear right now, Sky will replace Shreyas if there is a need, Ishan will replace Gill at the top and Shardul will play if it is a flat deck. Aswhin will come in his place if it is a turning track,” the former India wicketkeeper added.
