The South African batters produced a dominating batting display in their first encounter against Sri Lanka played at Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi on 7th October 2023 in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka won the toss and decided to field first. Dilshan Madushanka struck to get rid of South African captain Temba Bavuma. Quinton de Kock and Rassie Van der Dussen put on brilliant display putting the Lankan bowlers under pressure.

Both batters kept the momentum going for South Africa with boundaries and sixes at regular intervals that made life tough. Soon after completing his century, Quinton de Kock was dismissed providing a simple catch to Dunith Wellage to end a superb partnership for the 2nd wicket. Aiden Markram looked in sublime touch right from the word go putting enough pressure on Lankan bowlers. Rassie Van der Dussen also reached his century before Dunith Wellage dismissed him.

Aiden Markram timed the ball brilliantly keeping the Lankan bowlers under the pump along with Klassen. The right-handed batter Markram showed his class with fifty off 34 deliveries keeping pressure on Lankan bowlers. It was a sensational batting effort as he smashed Pathirana for runs with ease making life tough for Shanaka and Co.

Markram hit a spanking boundary to complete his century off 49 deliveries. He surpassed Kevin O Brian’s record of the fastest century in World Cup history. Markram showed his class with some lovely shots against the pacers and was eventually dismissed for 106 off 54 balls including 12 fours and 3 sixes. David Miller joined in the party with a quickfire knock that helped South Africa post 428 for 5 in 50 overs.

Aiden Markram breaks Kevin O Brian’s record of the fastest century in World Cup history

Aiden Markram surpassed Ireland’s batter Kevin O Brian’s record of the fastest century in World Cup history. Kevin scored a century off 50 deliveries during the 2011 edition match against England at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, and helped Ireland chase down a massive target.

For his match-winning performance, Kevin O Brian was named the player of the match award. Glenn Maxwell occupies the third spot with a century off 51 deliveries against Sri Lanka in the 2015 edition.
