After a narrow defeat to South Africa in the Cricket World Cup 2023, Babar Azam expressed his frustration towards Mohammad Nawaz. The match saw Pakistan coming incredibly close to victory, but it was the last-wicket partnership of Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi that secured a memorable win for South Africa.
With no pacers left, Babar turned to spinner Nawaz to take the crucial final wicket. Unfortunately, Nawaz was hit for a boundary by Maharaj, dealing a significant blow to Pakistan’s Cricket World Cup aspirations. Following the match, a viral video captured Babar Azam’s heated exchange with Nawaz.

South Africa managed to edge past Pakistan, securing a thrilling one-wicket victory and moving one step closer to the Cricket World Cup 2023 semi-finals. Aiden Markram’s impressive 91 and South Africa’s strong position at 206-4 made their chase of a 271-run target seem comfortable.
However, it ultimately fell to the last pair, Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi, who had to score 11 runs while facing 11 balls. Shamsi survived a leg-before appeal with the umpire’s call, and with eight runs needed, Maharaj struck a boundary off spinner Mohammad Nawaz to seal the win in 47.2 overs, leading to jubilant celebrations in the South African dressing room.
Tabraiz Shamsi post match said: “Really happy, you play enough cricket to know sometimes it goes for you, sometimes it doesn’t,”
Maharaj, who remained unbeaten at seven runs, also contributed 10 runs in a partnership for the ninth wicket alongside Lungi Ngidi, who scored four runs. However, Haris Rauf took a remarkable catch off his own bowling to dismiss Ngidi. With this victory, South Africa claimed the top position on the leaderboard with 10 points earned from five wins in six matches.
In contrast, Pakistan has experienced four consecutive losses after initially starting the tournament with two consecutive wins. They currently hold four points and will rely on favorable outcomes in other matches to have a chance of making it to the semi-finals.
