ICC Cricket World Cup 2023: [WATCH] Maharaj’s Delivery Leaves Shubman Gill And Virat Kohli Shocked

Team India had an exciting beginning as they chose to bat against South Africa in their eighth match of the 2023 World Cup group stage in Kolkata.

Rohit Sharma, the Indian captain, launched an early attack on the South African fast bowlers, quickly scoring 40 runs from just 24 balls before getting out to Kagiso Rabada.

Shubman Gill then took on the role of the aggressor, but Keshav Maharaj ended his innings with a remarkable delivery that even left Virat Kohli, who was at the non-striker’s end, puzzled.

Gill looked completely surprised, and this was evident to both on-field umpires. They decided to seek the third umpire’s assistance in making the decision.

Maharaj delivered a slower-paced, flighted ball that cleverly drifted in from the outside leg. As Gill moved forward, the ball tempted him but then cunningly spun past the outside edge.

Gill was taken off guard by the ball’s path, dip, and spin, causing it to clip the top of the off-stump. After checking the replays, it was clear that the ball had indeed hit the stumps, and Gill had to leave the field.

During the World Cup, Shubman Gill often made good beginnings but couldn’t capitalize on them. For example, in the match against Pakistan, he quickly reached 16 runs with four boundaries but then got out to Hasan Ali.

He managed 26 runs against New Zealand and just 9 against England. However, in the last game against Sri Lanka, he played impressively, scoring a rapid 92.

India has secured a spot in the semi-finals of the tournament, winning all seven matches without a loss. South Africa, while also performing well, had a surprising defeat to Netherlands.

With six wins in seven games, they are currently second in the standings and secured their semi-finals spot on Saturday.

India aims to maintain their leading position by defeating South Africa on Sunday. They will conclude their group stage matches with a game against Netherlands on November 12.
