During the 2023 World Cup match between India and New Zealand in Dharamshala on October 22, India’s captain Rohit Sharma briefly left the field due to concerns over an injury caused by the poor condition of the playing surface.

This happened in the 10th over of New Zealand’s innings when Rohit slid while attempting to prevent a boundary, leading to a minor injury on his throwing hand as the ball got stuck.

KL Rahul assumed responsibility in the absence of Rohit, as vice-captain Hardik Pandya was sidelined due to an ankle injury. Fortunately, the captain returned shortly after.

The playing field’s condition has raised concerns since the tournament’s opening game between Afghanistan and Bangladesh on October 7.

Numerous players have experienced slips while trying to prevent boundaries. This is the fourth World Cup match held at this venue.

England and Afghanistan had previously highlighted the subpar playing surface in Dharamsala. After the initial match, Mohit Sood, the Secretary of HPCA, stated to ANI:

“We recently redid the whole ground and we had got in Bermuda grass which is winter grass and the first time it is used in the country the weather has been difficult for the last six months there has been a lot of rain and the winter had prolonged.”

He added:

“We are hopeful and we are working overnight to rectify the problem so that the players don’t face any issues when they are fielding. Yeah, definitely you can see it for yourself the condition has improved over the last game.”
