The Indian Cricket Team registered a comprehensive 8-wicket win over Afghanistan in a one-sided contest played at Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi on 11th October 2023. Chasing down 273 runs to win, Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan smashed the Afghanistan bowlers putting on 156 for the opening wicket laying a strong foundation for a big win.
Shreyas Iyer came to the crease and looked in brilliant touch. He smashed the biggest six of this tournament so far with 101 m going onto the third tier off Mujeeb Ur Rahman in the 33rd over. It was a dominating win as Kohli scored his second successive half-century and remained not out on 55. Shreyas Iyer remained not out on 25 off 23 deliveries helping Team India register a dominating win with 15 overs to spare.

It was a superb effort by Rohit Sharma who took on the Afghanistan bowlers right from the word go and kept scoreboard ticking on a placid batting paradise. Rohit completed fifty off 30 deliveries and kept hitting boundaries at will. It was a brilliant effort as Rohit and Ishan Kishan kept showing their class. India lost their first wicket as Ishan Kishan made 47.
Indian openers put on 156 runs laying a strong foundation for a big win. Rohit completed a century off 63 deliveries which is the fastest by an Indian in World Cup history. He was eventually dismissed for 131 off 84 deliveries with 16 fours and 5 sixes. Shreyas Iyer failed to contribute in the first match against Australia but looked in decent touch against Afghanistan which will give confidence ahead of the high-octane encounter on 14th October at Ahmedabad.
Bowlers restrict Afghanistan to a modest total
Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of bowlers for India with 4 for 39. He got the initial breakthrough by dismissing Ibrahim Zadran. Hardik Pandya dismissed dangerous Rahmanullah Gurbaz before Shardul Thakur got rid of Rahmat Shah to leave Afghanistan in trouble.
The partnership between Afghanistan captain Shahidi and Omarzai was going on well before Hardik Pandya dismissed Omarzai. Jasprit Bumrah showed his class in the death ending with figures of 4 for 39 to help India restrict Afghanistan to 272 for 8.
