On his 35th birthday, Virat Kohli celebrated in style by scoring his 49th ODI century against South Africa in the 37th match of the 2023 ODI World Cup at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. His outstanding innings of 101 not out from 121 balls contributed to India’s total of 326/5 in 50 overs.
Additionally, with this century, he equalled Sachin Tendulkar’s world record for the most ODI hundreds. In the second innings, India made an early breakthrough by dismissing Quinton de Kock for just 5 runs off 10 balls, putting South Africa under pressure with a score of 17/1 after five overs.
Following the over, Kohli was spotted mouthing the lyrics of the popular song ‘Chaleya’ by Arijit Singh from Shahrukh Khan’s latest Bollywood movie ‘Jawan.’
The star cricketer not only sang along but also mimicked SRK’s signature pose, delighting the crowd, who responded with loud cheers of appreciation.

Mendis didn’t congratulate Virat Kohli on his 49th ODI century
In a press conference before their World Cup match against Bangladesh, Sri Lanka’s captain, Kusal Mendis, was asked if he wanted to congratulate Virat Kohli on his 49th ODI century.
Surprisingly, Mendis declined, saying, “Why would I congratulate Kohli?” Virat Kohli achieved this milestone during the World Cup match against South Africa, drawing level with Sachin Tendulkar for the most ODI centuries. Kohli has been in excellent form in the 2023 World Cup, amassing 543 runs in eight games.
Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are scheduled to compete at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium. However, uncertainties surround the match due to the severe pollution in Delhi.
Both teams have performed poorly in the tournament and have almost no chance of making it to the semi-finals. While Sri Lanka is not officially out, the likelihood of them reaching the top 4 is extremely low.
