ICC Imposes Suspension On Wanindu Hasaranga

ICC has handed a two-match suspension to Sri Lankan cricketer Wanindu Hasaranga, while Afghan player Rahmanullah Gurbaz has been fined 15% of his match fee. The sanctions come in response to their misconduct during the recently concluded ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Hasaranga was found guilty of breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during Sri Lanka’s match against South Africa.

The incident occurred during the 10th over of South Africa’s innings when Hasaranga, after dismissing David Miller, celebrated excessively, which was deemed inappropriate. As a result, he received one demerit point in addition to the suspension. This punishment means he will miss Sri Lanka’s upcoming matches against the Netherlands and Namibia. On the other hand, Gurbaz, the Afghan wicketkeeper-batsman, was penalized for showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during Afghanistan’s match against Scotland.

Gurbaz expressed his dissatisfaction after being given out, which led to the imposition of the fine. The charges against both players were leveled by on-field umpires Chris Gaffaney and Nitin Menon, third umpire Joel Wilson, and fourth official Rod Tucker. The players admitted to the offenses and accepted the proposed sanctions, eliminating the need for a formal hearing. Additionally, as part of the sanctions, Hasaranga’s demerit points will be added to his disciplinary record. This incident underscores the ICC’s commitment to maintaining discipline and fair play within the sport. The ICC’s Code of Conduct sets clear guidelines for player behavior, and any violations are dealt with promptly and appropriately.

These penalties serve as a reminder to players to adhere to the highest standards of sportsmanship and respect for the game’s officials. Both Hasaranga and Gurbaz will now have to be more cautious with their conduct in future matches to avoid further disciplinary action. The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup witnessed intense competition among teams from around the world, and such incidents highlight the importance of maintaining composure and decorum on the field. As the tournament progresses, players and teams must prioritize fair play and uphold the spirit of cricket.
