ICC ODI World Cup 2023: “The Situation Is Not That Great” – Sri Lanka Shares Update On Wanindu Hasaranga’s Injury Ahead Of The Mega Event

Sri Lankan all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga is unlikely to participate in the upcoming 2023 ICC ODI World Cup, which is set to take place in October-November in India. Sri Lanka’s medical panel shared an update on Hasaranga’s injury ahead of the mega-championship.

The 26-year-old cricketer picked up a hamstring injury during the playoffs of the Lankan Premier League this year. He missed the Asia Cup which took place earlier this month. The Sri Lankan medical panel headed by Arjun de Silva isn’t very optimistic about Hasaranga’s availability for the World Cup.

Speaking to The Sunday Times, Arjun De Silva expressed that Hasaranga will be out for atleast three months if surgery is needed. He said,

“We are consulting foreign doctors to see whether he needs surgery or not. If he does, he will be out for at least three months. At the moment, the situation is not that great. It’s highly unlikely that he can play in the World Cup.”

Decision regarding Wanindu Hasaranga’s participation to be taken after consultation

Arjun De Silva further expressed that they are exploring other possible options to ensure Wanindu Hasaranga is available for the ODI World Cup. The final decision will be taken after consultation with medical experts. Arjun De Silva said,

“Since he is a key weapon in our attack, we are looking at other options to see how best we can get his services at least for important games. All that depends on the opinions of the consultant to whom we are trying to show his reports.”

Sri Lanka ended up as the runners-up in the recently concluded 2023 Asia Cup at home. They lost to India in the final by 10 wickets. Sri Lanka will be keen to make a comeback in the 2023 World Cup. They will kick off their campaign on Saturday, October 7 against South Africa in Delhi.
