ICC T20 World Cup 2021: Watch: Asghar Afghan Given A Guard Of Honour By Afghanistan Players Against Namibia

Asghar Afghan

Former Afghanistan skipper Asghar Afghan is playing his last international match for his country. Afghan has decided to retire from the game after this game against Namibia. Its a must-win game for the side to stay in the contest in the T20 World Cup. Asghar came out to bat in the 10th over after the fall of Rahmanullah Gurbaz who was dismissed for just four.

Afghanistan won the toss and opted to bat. Meanwhile, Afghan was given a guard of honour as he walked out to bat. It was an emotional moment for the former skipper who made his international debut back in 2009. The 33-year-old played six Tests, 114 ODIs and will bring curtains to his career with 75 T20Is. He’s scored 4215 runs across formats and led Afghanistan in 115 matches.

Statement On Asghar Afghan’s Retirement

Asghar Afghan has the most number of T20I wins as a skipper surpassing MS Dhoni’s tally of 41 earlier this year. He also holds the record for most consecutive matches for a captain (46) in T20Is. In 59 ODIs as captain, Afghan bagged 34 wins and 21 losses in 59 matches while he won 42 off the 52 matches as T20Is captain. The former skipper made his T20I debut in 2010.

Asghar Afghan also led the side when they played their first Test ever against India back in 2018. Afghan was appointed captain in place of Mohammad Nabi soon after the 2015 World Cup and held the position for four years. He was replaced as captain by Gulbadin Naib ahead of the 2019 World Cup. In December 2019, Afghan started his second stint as captain but was once again removed in May this year.

Afghanistan are currently placed second on the points table in group 2 with two points and a net run-rate of +3.092
