ICC T20 World Cup 2024: Obed McCoy Replaces Injured Jason Holder In The West Indies Squad

Jason Holder

ICC T20 World Cup 2024

The West Indies Cricket Team has been dealt a major blow as Jason Holder has been ruled out of the tournament due to an injury. Jason Holder would be a major miss for the West Indies as he is handy with both bat and ball.

Jason Holder got an injury during the county championship match for Worcestershire with a brilliant century in the last game earlier this month. The West Indies board press release did not say about Holder’s injury and the recovery time that it will take to heal the injury.

“Jason is an experienced player in our set-up. His absence will undoubtedly be felt both on and off the field,” chief selector Desmond Haynes said. “We look forward to having a fully fit Jason with us again soon.

West Indies has been clubbed with Afghanistan, New Zealand, Uganda, and Papua New Guinea in Group C. Rovman Powell-led side will look to qualify for the Super 8 stage as they are likely to win against Uganda and PNG. Their toughest challenge would be against Afghanistan and New Zealand.

The hosts West Indies would begin their journey against PNG on 2nd June while playing Uganda on 8th June. They will play both PNG and Uganda at Providence Stadium, Guyana. West Indies will face New Zealand in their match of the Group at Brian Lara Cricket Academy, Trinidad, and Tobago on 12th June.

Their final match will be against Afghanistan on 17th June against Afghanistan in St Lucia. The West Indies Cricket Board named five reserves in case of an injury to the 15-member squad. These five players include Kyle Mayers, Matthew Forde, Fabien Allen, Hayden Walsh Junior, and Andre Fletcher.

Obed McCoy’s Replacement For Jason Holder

Obed McCoy performed brilliantly for the West Indies A in historic five-match T20I series against Nepal. He was the leading wicket-taker for West Indies A with 8 wickets from 5 games. West Indies A won the series by 3-2.

West Indies beat England in 3rd ODI to win their first ever series win in 16 years

McCoy had decent figures in the first two T20Is against South Africa at Jamaica with 0 for 32 and 2 for 15. The left-arm pace bowler has lots of variations in his armory and joins Alzarri Joseph, and Shamar Joseph along with Andre Russell, and Romario Shepherd as pace bowling options.

Akeal Hossein and Gudakesh Motie are the two genuine spinners included. Rovman Powell would be hoping to lead West Indies to their third T20 World Cup title in front of the home crowd.

“While it is unfortunate to lose a player of Jason’s calibre, we are confident in the abilities of Obed McCoy. Obed has shown remarkable skill and promise in his performances, and this opportunity will allow him to further showcase his talent on the international stage. We believe he will bring a fresh and dynamic energy to the squad.”
