Afghanistan registered their first-ever win over New Zealand in the T20I format during the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 match played in Providence Stadium, Guyana on 8th June.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran looked impressive putting on 103 runs for the opening wicket that laid a strong foundation for Afghanistan to post a decent total. Gurbaz looked impressive with a well-made 80 that ensured that Afghanistan made 159 for 6.

Fazalhaq Farooqi and Rashid Khan did the damage for Afghanistan picking up 4 wickets each to skittle New Zealand out for 75 in 16.2 overs. It was a dominating bowling performance as they did not allow Kiwi batters to score runs easily. With this win, Afghanistan consolidated their top spot in Group C.

Afghanistan made an impressive start to the tournament with a resounding 125-run win over debutant Uganda.  They need just a win for qualifying to the Super 8 stage which would be a massive achievement for the Afghanistan side.

Afghanistan played a total of 132 T20 matches with 81 wins, 48 losses, 2 tied and 1 no-result. They featured 26 matches against Ireland, 15 against Zimbabwe, and 11 against Bangladesh. Afghanistan made their T20 World Cup debut in the 2010 edition in West Indies. Their best performance came during the 2016 edition where they played 7 matches with 4 wins and 3 losses.

During the 2021 edition played in UAE, Afghanistan finished 7th with 2 wins and 3 losses. Afghanistan would be looking to prove their worth as they face PNG and West Indies in the remaining two matches of the ongoing edition of T20 World Cup 2024.

Performance Of Afghanistan In ICC World Cup 2023

Afghanistan featured a total of 166 ODI matches with 79 wins, 82 losses, 1 tie and 4 no-results. They played their first game on 19th April 2009. Afghanistan took part against Ireland in 32 ODI matches with 18 wins, 13 losses, and 1 no-result. They featured in most of their matches against Scotland and the Netherlands.

Afghanistan’s performance was brilliant during the 2023 edition of the World Cup played in India. They defeated the likes of former champions England, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and the Netherlands. Hashmatullah Shahidi and Co gave a tough fight to eventual champions Australia. They reduced them to 91 for 7 defending a target of 292. Afghanistan finished 6th in the points table above Pakistan.

They made their first ICC World Cup in 2015. Afghanistan registered their maiden victory against Scotland in a thrilling finish. Their performance was not great as they played 6 matches with 1 win and 5 losses. Afghanistan struggled in the 2019 edition of the World Cup played in England and Wales. They finished last without winning any of these matches.
