Due to persistent rainfall in Florida over the past two days and resulting wet conditions on the outfield, the critical match between co-hosts USA and Ireland has been cancelled, dashing Pakistan‘s hopes of advancing to the Super 8. As a result, the United States advanced to the Super 8 stage, while Ireland was also eliminated from the tournament.

Led by Monank Patel, the USA has emerged as a standout team in the current multi-nation event, surpassing expectations. They comfortably chased down a total of over 190 against Canada and went on to defeat Pakistan in a thrilling Super Over.

The co-hosts also put up a strong defense against India, holding them off with a total of just 110 runs, needing a victory or a no-result against Ireland to advance to the Super 8. For Ireland, their hopes rested on securing a win against the USA and then against Pakistan in their final group game scheduled for Sunday, to qualify for the Super 8.

However, their chances were dashed when their match against the USA was washed out, eliminating them from the tournament along with Pakistan.

Pakistan’s last group match against Ireland holds no significance

Pakistan has one remaining game in the T20 World Cup 2024, but it will now hold no importance. This marks the first time since the 2021 edition that they have not qualified for the T20 World Cup knockout stages.

In 2021, under Babar Azam’s captaincy, Pakistan reached the semifinals, and two years prior, they were the runners-up, losing to England in the final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Babar Azam’s team faced near elimination after their loss to the USA in Dallas via a Super Over.

They created a real opportunity to defeat Team India by bowling them out for 119 runs in 19 overs in New York but ended up losing by six runs. Despite defeating Canada, the 2009 T20 World Champions did not significantly improve their net run rate, and their elimination was confirmed by unfavourable weather conditions in Florida.
