“I’m The Same Guy Who Led India To The Champions Trophy” – Gambhir After IND Vs SA 2nd Test Loss

India head coach Gautam Gambhir reminded critics that the team won major tournaments like the 2025 Champions Trophy and 2025 Asia Cup under his leadership, following the disappointing home Test series defeat to South Africa. Pressure has increased on the former cricketer, as this marked India’s second home series loss in just over a year.

South Africa dominated both Tests in Kolkata and Guwahati, leaving India completely outplayed. The series ended in the worst possible way for the hosts, as they suffered a heavy 408-run defeat, confirming a 0–2 whitewash.

Chasing a massive target of 549 in the fourth innings, India lost both openers before stumps on Day 4. On the final day, the batting lineup collapsed again, managing only 140 runs and offering little fight. Gambhir hit back at doubts over his future, reminding critics that India won major titles earlier this year under him.

“It is up to BCCI to decide. I have said it in my first press conference after I took over as the head coach that Indian cricket is important, I am not important. And I sit here, and say exactly the same thing. Yes, people can keep forgetting that I am the same guy who got results in England as well with a young team.”

“And I am sure you guys will also forget very soon, because a lot of people keep talking about New Zealand. I’m the same guy under whom we won the Champions Trophy and the Asia Cup as well,” Gautam Gambhir said during the post-match press conference (via Star Sports).

Gambhir Urges Patience With Young Batters Amid Team’s Transition After Rohit, Kohli Exits

The head coach asked critics to be patient with the young batting group, explaining that they are still adjusting during a major transition period after the exits of senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

“I don’t give excuses, I have never done that in the past, and I will never do it in the future as well, but if you see the top four-five batters in this top eight, have literally played less than 15 Test matches. They will grow, they are learning on the job. So, you have got to give them time as well. Hopefully, they keep learning, that is important,” Gambhir said.

“I hate using the word transition, but this is exactly what transition is. They need time to absorb pressure, they need time to play against quality attacks and against sides,” Gambhir added.
