Indian cricket star Virat Kohli paid tribute to teammate Ravichandran Ashwin by bowing to him after the spinner claimed a five-wicket haul on Day 4 of the first Test match against Bangladesh in Chennai. Ashwin’s six-wicket performance in the second innings helped India secure a commanding 280-run victory.

This marked Ashwin’s 37th five-wicket haul, equaling the record held by Australian legend Shane Warne. During the 58th over of Bangladesh’s chase, Ashwin dismissed Mehidy Hasan Miraz, prompting a celebration among the Indian players. Kohli, in a gesture of admiration, bowed to Ashwin to honour his achievement.

Indian Squad Retained for Second Test

In the aftermath of India’s dominant win, the national selectors retained the same squad for the second Test, which will be held in Kanpur from September 27. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that no changes would be made to the team that secured the massive win. Despite earlier speculation that key players, such as pacer Jasprit Bumrah, might be rested for the second match due to workload management, the selectors opted for consistency.

Before the start of the series, Indian captain Rohit Sharma mentioned that the team would approach this series in a similar way to how they played against England earlier in the year. Ashwin’s stellar all-round performance, including his six-wicket haul, was central to India’s success in the first Test.

Bangladesh, tasked with chasing an improbable 515 runs, were bowled out for 234, with Ashwin’s 6 for 88 dismantling their second innings. India had earlier declared their second innings at 287 for 4, bolstered by centuries from Rishabh Pant (109) and Shubman Gill (119), which gave them a massive lead of 514 runs.

India’s dominant performance in the first Test against Bangladesh, spearheaded by Ravichandran Ashwin’s exceptional six-wicket haul, underscored their superiority as they clinched a massive 280-run victory. Ashwin’s efforts, along with centuries from Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill, ensured India a commanding lead and a 1-0 advantage in the series.

Virat Kohli’s bowing gesture to Ashwin highlighted the respect within the team for the spinner’s achievements, as he equaled Shane Warne’s record of 37 five-wicket hauls. With the same squad set to compete in the second Test in Kanpur, India will look to maintain their momentum and clinch the series.
