IND vs ENG: India Handed Five-Run Penalty, England To Begin First Innings At 5/0 In Rajkot Test

Ravichandran Ashwin India

Team India was handed a five-run penalty during the second day of the third Test against England on Friday, February 16 at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot. England will start their first innings with five for no loss owing to the offence.

The penalty was handed during the hundred and second over of the Indian first innings. Ravichandran Ashwin was warned by umpire Joe Wilson for running in the middle of the pitch. The Indian batter walked up to the umpire to have a word. Later Joel Wilson signaled five penalty runs. While this was Ashwin’s first offence, Ravindra Jadeja was also warned a few times earlier in the match by the umpires.

According to MCC’s law 41.14.1, which comes under the Unfair Play section, “It is unfair to cause deliberate or avoidable damage to the pitch. If the striker enters the protected area in playing or playing at the ball, he/she must move from it immediately thereafter. A batter will be deemed to be causing avoidable damage if either umpire considers that his/her presence on the pitch is without reasonable cause.”

Further, the law states that the team will receive a ‘first and final warning’ which will apply for the rest of the innings. A repeat of offence by any of the team members during the same innings will result in the batting team being awarded five runs.  As a result, England will start at 5/0 in their first innings of the ongoing third Test at Rajkot.

India goes past 400 runs

Team India went past the 400-run mark in the first innings of the third test against England at Rajkot. The partnership of Ravichandran Ashwin and Dhruv Jurel is going strong having added 60-plus runs to the eight-wicket stand. Earlier, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja slammed centuries each in the innings. Rohit scored 131 runs, while Jadeja scored 112 runs. Sarfaraz Khan also played a fine hand on debut, scoring 61 runs off 66 deliveries.
