The Indian Cricket Team suffered a narrow 28-run loss in the first Test match at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad on 28th January 2024. England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and decided to bat first. Zak Crawley and Duckett began off brilliantly before Indian bowlers kept tight lines.

Stokes played a captain’s knock that helped England post 246 runs in the first innings. For India, Jadeja and Ashwin took 3 wickets each while Bumrah and Axar Patel grabbed 2 wickets each.

Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma provided a flying start to the innings. Indian openers added 80 runs for the opening wicket laying a strong foundation for a big total. Yashavi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and KS Bharat got starts but were not able to convert into centuries. India took a massive lead of 190 runs in the first innings.

It was a sensational performance by the England batters as Crawley and Duckett put on 45 runs for the opening wicket. India looked in complete control but Ollie Pope along with Ben Foakes, Rehan Ahmed, and Tom Hartley put on valuable partnerships to post 420 runs in their 2nd innings setting a target of 231 runs.

In reply, Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma began well putting on 42 runs for opening wicket. Tom Hartley rattled the Indian batting picking up 7 wickets helping England register 28 28-run victory to take a 1-0 lead in the series.

With this loss, Rohit Sharma’s led side has slipped down the number fifth position in the World Test Championship for 2023-25. Australia lost to West Indies in a day-night pink ball test match at Gabba, Brisbane and their percentage points have slipped down to 55.

South Africa, New Zealand, and Bangladesh are currently at number 2, 3 and 4th position. All three teams have the same percentage of 50. The Indian Cricket Team has slipped down to 43.33.

Indian team has 5 test matches in the 2023-25 World Test championship cycle with 2 wins, 2 losses, and 1 draw. Rohit Sharma-led side defeated West Indies on West Indies soil with the first match won by India and then the second match at Port of Spain was drawn due to rains.

After this, India lost the first Test match at Centurion by an innings and 32 runs against South Africa before making a comeback to win the 2nd test at Cape Town by 7 wickets to draw the series at 1-1.

India will look to make a comeback in 2nd Test 

The Indian will look to make a strong comeback in the 2nd Test match to be played at Vizag from 2nd February and stake claim for a place during the 2023-25 World Test championship finals to be played next year.
