Shreyas Iyer has made a memorable start to his Test career by scoring a fifty on his Test debut. He came into bat with India losing three wickets pretty early and has grinded out to score his maiden test fifty. He was the 303rd Indian cricketer to make his Test debut.

Ahead of the start of the game, Shreyas Iyer was presented his Test cap by former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar. Gavaskar also congratulated him and gave him a pep talk before the game started.

Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer’s father Santosh, made an interesting revelation after his son scored a fifty on debut. Santosh revealed why he has not changed his Whatsapp DP since the last four years. Santhosh Iyer’s WhatsApp display picture shows Shreyas catching the trophy after India beat Australia 2-1 in a tightly contested Test series in the year 2017 in Dharamshala.

“I have had this DP since then. Never changed it because I always wanted to remind him that this [playing Test cricket] should be his ultimate goal. I am thrilled it’s finally happening,” said Santosh Iyer.

Iyer’s father also spoke about how he always wanted his son to play Test cricket for India.

“We always wanted him to play Test cricket. I have been telling Shreyas to try for a Test spot. He always used to say that it will happen. So, that’s what has happened now. Honestly, we were not expecting it to happen against New Zealand. I will be on my toes, certainly. We expect him to perform well. It is a big opportunity since other stalwarts are not in the team,” concluded Santosh Iyer.

Shreyas Iyer Scored 50 On Debut

India ended the on 258/4 with the on-field umpires calling off the day after artificial lights took over. Iyer was unbeaten on 75 with Jadeja batting on 50 as well. Both of them added an unbeaten 113-run stand for the fifth wicket.
