IND vs NZ 2021: Ravichandran Ashwin Eyes To Go Past Harbhajan Singh’s Major Record In First Test

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is on the cusp of achieving another record in the red-ball format for India. As the Indian team takes on New Zealand in the ongoing first Test at the Green Park in Kanpur, Ravichandran Ashwin is nearing India’s third-highest wicket-taker record.

Ashwin has 413 wickets, to his name in 79 matches in test cricket. He is just five wickets away from going past Harbhajan Singh 417 wickets tally, to become the third-leading wicket-taker for India in this format. Most wickets for India in test cricket – Anil Kumble 619 wickets, Kapil Dev 434 wickets, Harbhajan Singh 417 wickets, and Ravichandran Ashwin – 413 wickets.

The off-spinner also needs one more 10-wicket-haul, to equal Anil Kumble’s record of most 10-fors in Test cricket for India. Muttiah Muralitharan leads the tally with 22 ten-wicket hauls, while Kumble has eight and Ashwin has seven, 10-wicket hauls.

Indian pacer, Umesh Yadav will also be eyeing a special record in the first test match. He is only four wickets away from achieving the record of 100-test wickets in India. Umesh will become the fifth-Indian pacer after Kapil Dev, Javagal Srinath, Zaheer Khan, and Ishant Sharma to achieve this feat.

As far as the Indian team is concerned, they have an upper hand against New Zealand in home conditions. They have won each of the last three, Test series against the Kiwis on home soil.

Pacer Kyle Jamieson drew the first blood for New Zealand as he sent Mayank Agarwal back to the pavilion. Opening the innings, along with Shubman Gill, Mayank only managed 13 runs during his stay at the crease. He nicked an outside off-stump delivery straight to the keeper.

Earlier, Indian skipper Ajinkya Rahane choose to bat first against New Zealand in the first Test at the Green Park in Kanpur. Both the teams have gone with the three-spinners and two pacers combination. India is 36 for the loss of Mayank Agarwal’s wicket at the drinks interval in the first session.
