IND vs NZ: Virat Kohli Confronts Umpire Michael Gough After Jasprit Bumrah Forces Him To Overturn His Decision

During the fifth day of the first Test between India and New Zealand in Bengaluru, Virat Kohli was highly energetic, urging the crowd to back the Indian team. The tense moment came in the 13th over of New Zealand’s second innings when Jasprit Bumrah hit Devon Conway’s pads, seemingly trapping him in front of the stumps.

However, on-field umpire Michael Gough ruled it not out. After consulting his team, captain Rohit Sharma decided to go for a review. The decision was overturned as the ball was shown to be hitting the stumps, forcing Gough to reverse his call. Fired up after the dismissal, Kohli directed some choice words toward the umpire, expressing his emotions on the field.

The Crucial Dismissal of Devon Conway

The incident occurred at a key moment in the match, with India desperately needing a breakthrough. Bumrah’s delivery struck Conway’s pads, and the Indian fielders, including Kohli, immediately appealed. With a small target of 107 to defend, Rohit Sharma opted for the review, which proved successful.

Conway was dismissed for 17 off 39 balls, reducing New Zealand to 35-2. The breakthrough provided India with a much-needed boost, as Bumrah claimed his second wicket of the session, having already dismissed New Zealand captain Tom Latham earlier in the day.

India’s Resilience and Fightback

Despite early wickets, New Zealand remained in control, needing only 107 runs to win. Bumrah had earlier delivered a stunning inswinger to remove Latham for a duck in the second ball of the day, giving India a dream start.

Though New Zealand were in a strong position after posting 402 in their first innings, India showed great resilience in their second innings. Sarfaraz Khan’s 150 and Rishabh Pant’s 99 helped India post 462 runs, but a lower-order collapse left New Zealand with a manageable target. India’s bowlers fought valiantly, with Bumrah leading the charge, but New Zealand remained ahead in the match.
