Team India all-rounder Washington Sundar has tested positive for the global pandemic novel COVID-19. With this, he is now doubtful for the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa, starting January 19. While he was about to travel to Cape Town along with other players of the ODI squad, it is not sure now whether he will make it or not.

However, alongside others, Sundar is believed to be in Mumbai from where they will fly over to South Africa on Wednesday morning as well.

Incidentally, Washington Sundar has been out of international cricket for almost 10 months due to injuries. He had last played for India in March 2021. But, he recently returned during the Vijay Hazare Trophy where he played for Tamil Nadu and did fairly well which earned him a place in the ODI squad.

While there is no immediate information if the board will announce a replacement, an office-bearer has confirmed to Cricbuzz that Washinton Sundar has tested positive and won’t travel to South Africa as well. He said:

“He tested positive some days back and it has been decided that he will not travel with the squad.”

India have two spinners in their ranks in the ODIs

However, the KL Rahul-led side has two other spinners in the form of R Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal. The first ODI will be played in Paarl on January 19, whereas the second match will take place in the same place, on January 21 as well. And, the third ODI will take place at Newlands Stadium in Cape Town on January 23.

Currently, they have been playing the third Test after having won one Test each.
