Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly made an intriguing remark about India’s batting strength following their dominant six-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the Champions Trophy opener. The match showcased India’s depth in both bowling and batting. Mohammed Shami’s five-wicket haul and Harshit Rana’s impressive ICC tournament debut with three wickets played a crucial role in restricting Bangladesh.
However, despite a solid start in their 227-run chase, India faced a challenging phase when Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, and Axar Patel lost their wickets in quick succession. Fortunately, Shubman Gill (101) and KL Rahul (41) steadied the innings, ensuring a comfortable finish for the team.
Ganguly, discussing India’s batting lineup, made a notable comment that the team had “five Shubman Gills”—a reference to the number of players capable of scoring centuries. “India have five Shubman Gills from one, two, three, four, five, six—who can all score hundreds and win matches.
When Axar Patel bats at number five, can you imagine the depth?” Ganguly remarked, emphasizing the team’s formidable batting talent. He also highlighted India’s ability to recover from tough situations due to their well-balanced lineup, which includes finishers like KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, and Hardik Pandya.
India’s Favorable Chances Against Pakistan
Looking ahead to their much-anticipated clash against Pakistan, Ganguly expressed confidence in India’s chances. He asserted that India is not only the favourite in this match but also a top contender for the tournament title. Ganguly pointed out Pakistan’s struggles against quality spin bowling, suggesting that India’s strategy would revolve around their spinners.
“India are not just favorites against Pakistan but for me, they are favourites for this tournament. It won’t be easy for Pakistan. The spinners will also play a crucial part,” he stated.
Ganguly also speculated on India’s possible bowling combination, which might include seamers like Mohammed Shami, Harshit Rana, and Hardik Pandya, along with spinners such as Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, and Kuldeep Yadav. Given the pitch conditions in Dubai, he predicted that spin would play a decisive role, making it challenging for Pakistan to counter India’s attack.
India’s Strength in Depth and Talent
Ganguly credited India’s exceptional talent pool to its strong domestic cricket structure and training systems. He emphasized that the team’s depth allows them to field a well-rounded squad capable of handling pressure in crucial moments.
The victory against Bangladesh was a testament to their balanced approach, where both batting and bowling units contributed effectively. As India gears up for their upcoming encounters, their combination of experience and youthful talent makes them a formidable force in the tournament.
