India Progress To The Finals Of The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup After Semifinal Washout

Team India have made it to the finals of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup after the semifinal clash against England was abandoned without a ball being bowled at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The Harmanpreet Kaur-led side qualifies for the final by virtue of finishing higher on the points table.

Meanwhile, a washout was always on the cards, given the forecast and India's flawless run in the tournament ensured them their first-ever Women's T20 World Cup final berth. The young side played fearless cricket right through the tournament with 16-year-old Shafali Verma leading the batting unit while the bowlers produced combined effort to deliver the goods for their side.

India made it to the semifinal with an unbeaten run defeating Australia, Bangladesh, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka on their way. The win against the hosts Aussies set the tone for the Indian side who never lost momentum during the group stages. The semifinal clash was going to be a grand affair against Heather Knight-led England side, who had knocked India out in each of the last two marquee events – in London, 2017 and Antigua, 2018.

Captains Harmanpreet Kaur and Heather Knight eventually shook hands, about 20 minutes before the cut-off time for the toss after the umpires decided to call off the match without a ball bowled. Speaking at the end, skipper Harmanpreet said that it is unfortunate not to get a game due to weather. Meanwhile, ICC received a good bashing for not having a reserve day despite being aware of the weather conditions.

"It is unfortunate not to get a game due to the weather. But that's how the rules go. In future, it would be nice to have a reserve day. From day one, we knew that we have to win all the games because if in case we don't get any play in the semifinals, it will be hard for us. Credit to the team, we wanted to win all the games and we did it," Kaur said at the end of the game.

Meanwhile, India will clash with either of South Africa or Australia in the final, who play each other later today in the second semifinal in Sydney.
