India Under-19 captain Ayush Mhatre has been ruled out of the upcoming youth one-day series against South Africa after suffering a wrist injury, dealing an unexpected blow to the team’s preparations. The setback comes at a time when the young side is gearing up for the ICC Under-19 World Cup, making the South Africa tour an important build-up assignment.
According to officials, the injury requires careful management, and the team management did not want to take any risk with the skipper’s long-term fitness.
A source familiar with the decision was quoted as saying, “The medical team advised rest and rehabilitation to avoid aggravating the injury.” As a result, Mhatre will not travel with the squad for the series, despite being one of the key figures in the leadership group.
Rehabilitation Plan and World Cup Focus
Mhatre, along with vice-captain Vihaan Malhotra, will report to the BCCI Centre of Excellence to undergo rehabilitation and monitored recovery. The focus, officials stressed, is firmly on ensuring that both players are fully fit ahead of the Under-19 World Cup. “Our priority is the World Cup. We want the captain to be at 100 percent when it matters most,” a BCCI official said, underlining the long-term planning behind the call.
The Under-19 World Cup is scheduled to take place early next year, and the board believes missing a preparatory series is preferable to risking a prolonged injury. Team insiders remain confident that Mhatre will recover in time and resume training with the squad before the marquee tournament begins.
Leadership Shift for the South Africa Series
In Mhatre’s absence, the selectors have appointed Vaibhav Sooryavanshi as captain for the South Africa tour, handing the youngster a major leadership opportunity.
The decision reflects the selectors’ belief in building depth not only in playing resources but also in leadership options. “It’s a chance for other players to step up and take responsibility,” a selection committee member was quoted as saying. The team management views the tour as a platform for testing bench strength under challenging overseas conditions.
While the absence of the regular captain is significant, the coaching staff remains optimistic that the squad will benefit from the exposure. Meanwhile, Mhatre’s recovery will be closely tracked, with regular updates expected as India’s preparations for the Under-19 World Cup gather momentum.
