His win has taken India’s medals tally to 6 in the event. Despite suffering a knee injury during the semifinals, Bajrang Punia decided to play the match and won.

“Due to knee injury he (Bajrang Punia) was not able to perform attacking wrestling (y’day), which he is known for. We talked over phone early morning& I told him to give his best today (match for Bronze medal),” said Wrestler Bajrang Punia’s father, Balwan Singh.

Punia defeat Niyazbekov in the match 8-0 displaying great spirit in winning the match despite his knee injury. Later, javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra will be competing in the final and will look to win a historic medal for India in track-and-field events. Punia’s effort in the game is another example of the sportsman spirit from Indian athletes.

Meanwhile, Indian cricketers congratulated him on bagging another medal in the Tokyo Olympics 2020. Earlier PV Sindhu bagged a bronze in the women’s badminton match as well after Mirabai Chanu bagged a silver in weightlifting.
