India’s announcement that it won’t send its cricket team to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy 2025 has escalated tensions between the two nations. Political strains have prevented India and Pakistan from engaging in a bilateral cricket series for over a decade.
While Pakistan did visit India for the 2023 ODI World Cup, India’s government has opted not to reciprocate. India initially proposed a “hybrid” solution, suggesting that their matches be hosted in Dubai instead of Pakistan, but Pakistan rejected this proposal, deepening the standoff.
Potential Repercussions for Olympic Hosting Bid
This development may impact India’s bid to host the 2036 Olympics, as Pakistan reportedly intends to oppose India’s proposal. According to Geo News, Pakistan is prepared to withdraw from any international competitions against India if this issue isn’t resolved. Meanwhile, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has reached out to the International Cricket Council (ICC) for guidance, seeking clarity on the tournament’s hosting arrangements.
The ICC reportedly confirmed that India will not participate in Pakistan, but discussions on an alternative arrangement, like the hybrid model, have yet to progress. PCB officials remain in talks with Pakistan’s government for further direction on handling the situation.
PCB Seeks ICC Clarification on Hybrid Model
The PCB is reportedly evaluating the possibility of resuming discussions on the hybrid model, where India’s matches could take place in a neutral venue, potentially Dubai, while other matches remain in Pakistan. This model was previously used during the Asia Cup, with India’s games held in Sri Lanka.
However, a PCB source stated that no official conversation about a hybrid format has taken place with the ICC, and the board is still exploring its options. An official email is expected to be sent to the ICC, with input from PCB’s legal team, requesting further clarification on India’s position and the tournament’s organization. As the situation unfolds, the PCB has yet to make a definitive decision on its next steps.
