India’s Record After Setting A Target Of 350-plus In Tests?

India

The Indian cricket team is currently touring England for a five-match Test series, with the opening Test taking place at Headingley in Leeds. In the ongoing match, India has set a fourth-innings target of 371 runs for England. India has won 42 of 59 Tests when setting 350+ targets, losing only once.

That lone defeat came prior to the current series, also against England, during the rescheduled fifth Test of the 2021 tour, held at Edgbaston in July 2022. In that game, India had scored 416 in their first innings, thanks to centuries from Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja.

With the ball, Mohammed Siraj claimed four wickets and Jasprit Bumrah took three as England were bowled out for 284. In the second innings, India posted a total of 245, giving England a fourth-innings target of 378 runs.

However, the hosts successfully chased down the target on the fifth day, taking only 76.4 overs to do so. Joe Root remained not out on 142, while Jonny Bairstow also stayed unbeaten with a score of 114, guiding England to a seven-wicket victory.

India Under Pressure On Final Day Of Leeds Test

India could be heading toward just their second loss in Tests while defending a target of more than 350 runs. In the ongoing Test at Leeds, the visitors set England a target of 371 runs but have been on the defensive for most of Day 5 so far. England’s openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett provided a strong platform with a 188-run stand before Crawley was dismissed for 65.

India managed a breakthrough soon after, as Ollie Pope departed cheaply for only eight runs. However, Duckett continued confidently, bringing up a century and remaining unbeaten on 120 (at the time of writing). He is now accompanied by Joe Root at the crease.

England have reached 213 for 2 in 46 overs and need just 158 more runs for victory with eight wickets in hand. With favorable conditions and strong batting, the hosts are in a commanding position as India looks for a way back into the match.
