INDvNZ : Leg-spinner Ish Sodhi to replace injured Todd Astle in NZ ODI Squad

The 31-year-old Todd Astle has been ruled out of the upcoming ODI and T20 series against India with a groin injury which he suffered in the first warm-up match against Board President XI. He could bowl only three deliveries in that match. He will be replaced by another leggie Ish Sodhi who was originally not included in the ODI squad.

According to New Zealand Cricket (NZC), a scan has confirmed that Astle has sustained a tear in his right side, which will make him sit out for three weeks. “Further assessment and a scan confirmed Astle to have suffered a tear on his right side, which will see him ruled out for around three weeks,” the press release said.

Mike Hesson while talking to media about Astle’s injury said that it was ‘cruel’ to him. “Todd was really impressive in the recent New Zealand ‘A’ tour over here and had done everything he possibly could to get himself ready for this series.”

“He deserved this opportunity and everyone in the team is certainly feeling for Todd. He’ll return to New Zealand and get himself ready for a big summer,” the coach further added.

The India born Sodhi, who was originally picked for the T20 squad, will take the place of Astle now. The wrist spinner has represented the Kiwis in 18 One-dayers taking 19 wickets with the best figure of 38 for 3.
