INDvNZ : New Zealand announces squad for the limited over series against India

The New Zealand team has announced their updated squad for the India series later this month which will see three ODI’s followed by three T20 matches. Notable, the New Zealand Cricket Board earlier announced the name of nine players for the ODI squad and the remaining six players later chose for the New Zealand A team’s tour to India.

The new cricketers will join the national side after getting done with their job for the New Zealand A side. The six players who were added on later are Colin Munro, the veteran Todd Astle, George Walker, the 20-year-old Glenn Phillips, Henry Nicholls and Matt Henry.

Phillips who is all set make his debut for the national side has had a great run in the domestic tournaments and is one of the top-scorer for New Zealand A in the ongoing series against India A side. He was also played a knock of unbeaten 140 runs in the second fifty –over the match.

“Glenn has made an immediate effect in domestic cricket and has certainly taken his opportunity over here with NZ A, including an outstanding 140 not out. Glenn is an option for us with the gloves in both Twenty20s and ODIs, so we feel we have our bases covered with the 15 we’ve picked,” New Zealand selector who is also the manager for the New Zealand A squad said after the selection.

Astle, who was given nod ahead of wrist-spinner Ish Sodhi has two first-class hundreds and 312 wickets behind his name. He has represented New Zealand in two test matches and two T20’s. However, Sodhi was picked for the T20 squad.

“Todd has been one of the best white-ball players in domestic cricket the last few seasons and he is backed that up with a strong showing for New Zealand A. Todd brings all-around skill to the squad, quality leg spin, is athletic in the field as well as being able to contribute with the bat,” he further added.

The squad for the T20 series will almost remain same; however, star batsman Ross Taylor and George Walker will travel back to New Zealand after the fifty-over series.

The first One-day match is scheduled to take place in Mumbai on October 22, followed by the other two matches. The T20 series will start on November 1 and will continue till 7th November.
